Amazon driver witnesses armed robbery, then gets robbed by the same crew (video)

CHICAGO — An Amazon delivery driver saw an armed robbery in progress as he made deliveries in Back of the Yards on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately, he got out of his car before the robbers left, and they stopped their getaway car to rob him, too. Ring surveillance footage captured the entire episode.

The robberies occurred in the 4800 block of South Honore around 3:20 p.m.

Video footage, shared below, shows the first victim walking down the street and the Amazon driver pulling to a stop, presumably to make a delivery. At the same time, the robbers zoom down the block, stopping a few yards behind the courier’s car to rob the pedestrian.

Three hooded robbers, at least one armed with a gun, step out of the burgundy Dodge Charger and quickly surround the victim, who falls to the ground. The Amazon driver, still in his car, sees the robbery unfolding and yells out.

After rifling the victims’ pockets, the crew heads back toward the Dodge Charger as the Amazon driver steps out of his vehicle. He keeps his eye on the victim as he walks toward the sidewalk, carrying a package and his phone.

You can almost feel the sinking feeling he must have felt as the Dodge Charger zipped down the street and pulled to a stop next to him.

In a particularly optimistic move, the driver tries to shoo away the robbers by waving his phone at them. It doesn’t work. A gunman immediately emerges from the Charger’s back seat and walks directly up to the delivery driver, poking a pistol into his ribs. The other two robbers follow.

Within seconds, the driver is relieved of his phone and wallet, and the robbers zoom away. The crew is suspected of committing several other robberies in the area.

Robberies reports are down 5% compared to last year in CPD’s Deering (9th) District, with 149 cases reported as of last Monday. That’s down from 157 last year, but well above the years immediately before and during the pandemic.
