Rapper carjacked 2 drivers in 30 minutes (while on pretrial release for a machine gun case), Chicago cops say

CHICAGO — A Chicago rapper is charged with carjacking two people in a single night while he was on pretrial release for a machine gun possession case. Judge Charles Beach detained Virgil Gibson, also known as PGF Nuk, during a hearing at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse.

Gibson, 22, has been facing a felony machine possession charge since last summer. Chicago police said they found the firearm on the floorboard of a car he was driving. The cops stopped Gibson because the plate on the car had been flagged for impound after it previously eluded police, according to his arrest report.

The report said Gibson’s passenger told cops that the gun belonged to Gibson, and Gibson told them it belonged to his passenger. Regardless, Gibson picked up the charge, which is still pending.

Prosecutors now say Gibson carjacked two people in less than 30 minutes at separate gas stations on the South Side.

The first hijacking occurred at a service station in the 5900 block of South Morgan around 11:47 p.m. on April 7. Prosecutors said Gibson, armed with a pistol, took a 32-year-old man’s Chevy Malibu at gunpoint.

About 30 minutes later, he arrived at a gas station in the 8300 block of South Cottage Grove in the victim’s Chevy Malibu. There, entered a man’s 2022 Kia Optima and forced the victim into the passenger seat at gunpoint, prosecutors said. 

He forced the 35-year-old victim to transfer money to his bank account electronically, made him remove some of his clothing, and then ordered him out of the car, prosecutors said in a detention petition. The victim does not know Gibson, according to officials.

Covert Chicago police officers later saw Gibson park the hijacked Kia in the 1600 block of West 55th Street and walk away, according to a CPD report. The officers said they found Gibson hiding in the janitor’s closet of a nearby phone store.

Gibson looks like the carjacker and was wearing the same gym shoes as the offender, police said in their report, citing video footage of the crimes.

He is charged with two counts of aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm, aggravated kidnapping, and aggravated unlawful restraint.

One of Gibson’s most recent Instagram posts showed people filming Gibson on their phones inside a convenience store as two Chicago cops walked in.

“Who da rapper?” one cop asked.

After people respond that there is no rapper, a cop asks what the video is for.

“Cause we just like to record our life,” Gibson replies. “People don’t make it in Chicago, so you just gotta start recording your day-to-day life ‘cuz you might die.”
